Amie Freling HomeGoods blogger, Meme Hill Studio Decorating with YELLOW

Never in a million years would I imagine that I would be decorating my home for Fall with a bright yellow! Yes, I am a serious color lover but I always felt that yellow was a difficult color to blend in. There are so many shades and keeping it sophisticated while avoiding a juvenile yellow seemed impossible but I believe I have proved myself wrong and Im ready to share how decorate with yellow for Fall.

Yellow & Color Theory

They say that children who grown up in a yellow room are more creative. Well, guess what color room I had as a child? Yellow, you guessed correct. My room had soft yellow walls and bright yellow glazed bamboo bedroom set. I can just see it now… Fast forward 30+ years and looking to make some Fall additions to our home I headed out to HomeGoods to see what season decor was on the shelves.

Shopping Home Decor Trends

Right when I entered the store I was greeted by a Moroccan display filled with global gorgeousness.  The patterns and elegance of the blue glass, colorful beads, adorned tassels and elaborate stitching drew me in. There she was! I immediately gravitated to this tall turquoise glass vase with a brass base. This would become the centerpiece for my living room coffee table. I filled her up with 2 dozen sunflowers and greenery.

Working Yellow into Your Home Decor

I know we’re talking yellow and the first thing in my cart is turquoise. Well, turquoise has always been a staple in our home and whatever color I was going to add had to coordinate or compliment my existing decor. I knew a yellow vase and yellow flowers would get washed out. The turquoise anchored the yellow. They were a perfect match and the Fall color scheme  began to FALL into place.

All Shapes and Sizes

In my cart I piled an array of white, yellow and amber pumpkins. Ceramic, velvet, wood and even straw. All sizes and all shapes. I couldn’t wait to get them home and on the mantel. I balanced out the white decor with the yellows and added pops of turquoise.  On the coffee table all white decor acts as a blank canvas and takes a back seat to the large statement  sunflower floral arrangement.

Flanking our fireplace are two extra tall winged back chairs. These modern takes on the classic design usually have summer slipcovers but come Fall the floral slipcovers come off to highlight my favorite pillows. This year I have been obsessed with plaid and when I saw these two yellow plaid down filled beauties it was a no-brainer purchase. Have you jumped on the buffalo check bandwagon?

Working in Pattern Play & Texture

I gave you a little peek of our kitchen morning room in my first image. This is my most favorite spot in the whole house and the first thing that you see when you enter our home. The large Summer grass arrangement got swapped out with a quartet of pumpkins.  Simple and uncomplicated this grouping makes me so happy. I added more pumpkins to the sideboard. This will take me well into Fall considering I’m not a big fan of Halloween decorations.

Black and white are a staple in my home decor and naturally I gravitate to pattern and all things black and white. I will admit that buying a blanket was not on my shopping list but when I touched this Pendleton Home collection throw blanket there was absolutely no going back. It is seriously THE COZIEST BLANKET I HAVE EVER OWNED!  My daughter Chloe immediately snatched it up and now I might need to go back to HomeGoods for my own.

Dining Table Centerpieces

Our 10 foot farm table is adjacent to the morning area. Last year, I painted the table white from red to accommodate my season decor disorders. LOL.  While shopping at HomeGoods I spotted this massive ceramic light minty green pumpkin. One part of me wanted to paint it yellow but once I added a greenery garland with yellow flowers and gathered all my white owls the light green color looked fabulous. Therefore, no work had to be done to her!

Birds of a Feather

Most importantly, my Spring chicks with gold beaks had some friends at the dinner table.  The birds and the owls give the table a monochromatic whimsical elegance.  I anchored the grouping with a light gray and white table runner also from HomeGoods.

Trendspotting

While In NYC last week for the Better Homes and Gardens Stylemaker event I carved out some spare time to shop with a few of my HomeGoods blogger friends. YELLOW WAS EVERYWHERE! From clothing to home decor, paint and wallpaper to lighting and everything in between.  I considered myself one who never entertained the thought of adding yellow for home decor. Things have changed. I hope they do for you also,  More importantly, when out shopping, leafing through your favorite magazine or surfing Pinterest keep an eye out for this energetic sunny hue and give her a second look. I would love to hear your opinions on YELLOW. Feel free to leave a comment below about this post. And If bright is not your style head on over to another Fall post where I give 7 Tips to creating a rich inviting home using metallic and deep jewel tones.

Gorgeous Amie! I love how you have established a colorful base, but with so much white/off white that you can have fun with seasonal additions. And yes I’m on the buffalo check wagon – been here before. A generation or two older than you, I can think of three distinct eras when I had buffalo check and I’m always glad to see it pop up. Love your energy and style!
