How to Design a Chic Affordable Teen Room That Will Last For Years

How to design A Chic Teen room that will last for years

Welcome back Friends! I’m so excited to be sharing this wonderful teen room makeover that I just wrapped up this week.  I’ll be giving you helpful tips on how to create a chic timeless room for your teen that will last well into their college years. And all on a budget!

It’s no secret that creating fun kids rooms are top on my favorite list of makeovers. It started years ago when I was young. My mom jokes with me “I could never punish and send you to your room because you love spending time in there.”  It was true… I would come out of my room and have the entire space redecorated! LOL.  Years later, I still enjoying moving furniture around and making pretty spaces.

Here’s a picture of my client’s daughter’s room just a few months ago. Bella’s mom mentioned that she had grown out of her hot pink walls and little girl accessories and was ready to redecorate with a grown-up look.  Here’s how the process went:

1. Paint it Pretty

I’ve mentioned before that paint is the #1 cost effective way to make the biggest impact when changing the look of a room.  The hot pink walls were painted a beautiful light silvery gray color. Bella wanted an off-white room so I chose Rock Candy SW6231 by Sherwin Williams. The new color immediately brought her room to a more sophisticated level! The light color allowed us to accessorize with whatever hues we wanted. These neutral walls are ready for when the time comes that Bella decides to change out bedding and/or accessories.

2. Create a Mood Board

Not everyone has the vision of what a room should look like finished. I love to create mood boards for my clients so that they get to see how each piece fits in the overall look of the room.  It doesn’t have to be a fancy graphic like below. Simply clip out pictures from magazine and/or catalogs or start a designated Pinterest board. To follow along on my Pinterest projects, click here

*Not every room needs all new furniture. Here we choose to keep Bella’s classic white sleigh bed, desk and nightstand.  It’s classic bright white color and timeless style allowed us to adapt with any look and stay within budget.

3. Find Your Inspiration

Whether it’s a favorite bedding, artwork, accent pillow, or inspirational quote it’s helpful to have one piece that really speaks to you as a starting point. Bella fell in love with this tapestry called Sea Bliss from society 6. It’s an ethereal aerial view of turquoise waves crashing onto a blush pink beach. It was the perfect color inspiration and boy did I run with it!

4. The Color Pyramid

When designing rooms I balance out the relationships of colors into a loose 70:20:10 ratio.  In Bella’s room roughly 70% of the color is a bluish gray color. Then came 20% with pops of pink and finally accents of gold. Using this ratio often creates a soothing palette and is easily changeable down the road.

We layered Bella’s bed with a beautiful puckered comforter cover set from Pier 1 called the Savannah Celestial Comforter Set. Then accessorized with a super luxurious blush pink faux fur throw blanket and whimsical fun accent pillows.

5. Balancing Beauty

I’ve mentioned this before the rooms are often square. I always mix things up and eliminate some of the static of a square room by adding round elements. Complementing the curves of Bella sleigh bed is a beautiful round jeweled starburst mirror. We centered it over her bed creating an eye catching focal point.

6. Play With Scale

On the wall just left of her bed is the large tapestry called Sea Bliss  from Ingrid Beddoes Photography  that I mentioned earlier in the post. This acts as the rooms largest piece of artwork.  The entire wall needs nothing but the tapestry and two awesome gold metal arrows.

*Avoid filling entire walls up with small items.  Balance out large and small with color and textures and 2- and 3-dimensional art.

If you think this photograph tapestry is beautiful you should check out Society 6. It is a website that thousands of artist use to sell their artwork. You can find any piece of artwork and apply it to hundreds of items. I often find a lot of my inspiration on their website. On the opposite wall we reused a mirror that she had. Often people think that they need an entire room of new furniture in order to make a space look fresh. That’s not true! I love reusing client’s existing pieces and giving them an entire new look as in Bella’s room.

7. Saying Goodbye

Sometimes a piece of furniture or decor just doesn’t add to the new plan. Reusing in another room, moving it to the attic or even donating are some of the best solutions.  Bella‘s mom felt that her armoire was too big and the wrong configuration and that a new dresser with multiple drawers would be more useful. This was the only piece of furniture that we replaced with a new dresser. It gave Bella more room to display photo frames and jewelry and hold all her essentials.  Without the tall large armoire the room visually looks bigger and more welcoming as you enter.

We found a turquoise accent chair at TJ Maxx, a matching gold and turquoise table lamp, art, picture frames and soft turquoise sheer curtain panels at HomeGoods. We replaced her silver curtain rods with gold caged final rods.

8. Chic Storage

Not everything needs to be hidden behind doors and in drawers. There are so many beautiful  storage options out there. Search for textured baskets, glamorous stacking and under the bed storage boxes, and fun functional wall and floor shelving pieces. You might recognize this white and gold narrow shelf from my daughter’s bathroom makeover.  It suited Bella’s need for more chic open storage. We split up the set of shelves and placed one to the left of Bella’s dresser to hold beauty products and hair accessories. Above it we hung a Make Today Great inspirational banner.

The other shelf was hung just above Bella’s desk.

9. RePurpose and ReUse

Previously Bella had used her desk for arts and crafts. It was located right as soon as you came into her room and became a catchall for anything and everything. We reused it as a nightstand, laptop desk and make-up table just on the other side of her bed.

10. Create A Cozy Corner

With the addition of a gold lamp, pretty mirrored storage boxes and makeup organizers, inspirational art and a whimsical gold removable decal wall clock this area has become Bella’s favorite little multi-purpose cozy corner. There is so much use in this fabulous corner!

The Big Reveal

I finished setting up Bellas room before she came home from school. It was music to my ears to hear that Bella loved her new room! Her mom even told me that her room is now ALWAYS clean and that Bella proudly shows it off to her friends. Success!
