There’s nothing I love more than walking into a home that’s been decorated with festive Christmas spirit. So when it comes to decking the halls no one does it better than my sister Jenni. Last week I posted about her living room makeover (Happiness is a Journey) but when I stopped by this past Sunday and saw her tree and decorations I just had to share again with its totally new holiday look.
As soon as you come into the front foyer the front railing greets you with swags of pine, berries, pine cones and red plaid ribbon. I love this view into the living room. The 8 foot fresh Fraser Fir tree stands front and center of the picture window.
Ever since Jenni and I moved out on our own, our mom has started Christmas collections for us. For me, it’s my cherished glass Christmas ornaments and for Jenni it’s her nutcracker collection: a extensive mix of every kind and size nutcracker imaginable from expensive German one-of-a-kind nutcrackers to hand-painted nutcrackers by my niece Charlotte and nephew Ben from when they were toddlers(equally important). When Jenni and Mike bought their new house the dining room had a long built-in server. She knew it would be the perfect place for nuctcracker collection. I spy Ben’s hand painted snowman, can you?
Over the dining table Jenni weaved faux greens and red and green metallic ornaments into the chandelier. A large glass dome covers a mini pine flanked by bottle brush trees and pine scented candle votives. Simple and easy to move for family dinners and lets the collection nearby take center stage.
A fresh pine wreath hangs over the fireplace and the Raymour and Flanigan Priscilla accent chair gets a fir lined knit pillow. The gray of the fabrics matches perfectly with the fir. Comfortable and right near the fireplace, this chair is ideal for the Big Man in Red. The quatrefoil pattern and gentle sloped arms make this piece a timeless addition to the room and compliments the home’s traditional style and christmas decor.
The Lakeside Chair and a Half faces the fireplace and gets a needlepoint skiing pillow and cheery white and red throw blanket. When Jenni chose this chair and a half she had herself in mind but it is the kids who fight over who sits here. It actually is a perfect snuggle spot for two. This cheerful and inviting chair with comfortable cushions and a twill slip cover wraps it’s warm and welcoming arms around those who gets there first! I’ll race you.
We swapped out the gray for green velvet and added red knit and fir pillows on the Raymour & Flanigan Lakeside Sofa . The equally comfortable and timeless companion to the chair and a half. Tis the season for more bottle brush trees set out to cheerfully adorn The Draper Glass coffee table . Out with the fall leaves and mini pumpkins and in with greens and sparkly holiday decor.
The Draper coffee table is Jenni’s favorite. She says “It’s the perfect mix of modern and rustic.” There’s no way you can loose anything in these drawers. We placed extra greens, silver wooden orbs, glass ornaments and deer antlers inside. Such a pretty view from all angles. Better yet Jenni plans on storing her favorite throws and blankets here for easy access on those cold winter nights.
I just loved the hand sewn felt tree skirt with little beaded flower centers. Its bright colors and three dimensional graphics reminds me of my Swedish heritage.
In the back hall mudroom Stella waits on Santa patiently. A narrow hallway mirror equipped with a shelf and drawer to store keys and phones is occupied this time of the year by more nutcracker figurines. Did you know according to German folklore nutcrackers were given as keepsakes to bring good luck to your family and protect your home?
Leaning against the back of the house, a set of vintage skis await the first snow. I found these classics at a roadside sale in the Adirondacks for $2. A black dog statue remembering Stella’s sister Magie gets a fresh pine wreath. The spirit of Maggie welcomes all who comes into the home.
