A Spring Snow Storm!

Welcome to the Spring Blogger Home Tour where we share ideas on how you can style your home for Spring. I am excited to share some new bright and happy family room accents and furniture. If you’re coming over from my friend Tamara from Citrine Living “Welcome.” Don’t you just love her home and all the architectural details?

The past several days have been crazy. Last week we had a wind storm that topped the records at 81 MPH in Upstate NY and Tuesday another snow storm that crippled the East Coast. To say that we are ready for Spring is an understatement. While we were without power last week we camped out at my sister Jenni’s house.  Her 6 bedroom home was the coziest “hotel”  for our family and friends. When cable and wifi are down there’s not much to do but to eat, play games, watch DVD’s and of course DECORATE. haha!

Spring Room Refresh!

We’ve been planning this room makeover for a while now. When Jenni and Mike purchased the home this family room was painted  a rich golden color and had tapestry custom roman shades. Although the shade were beautiful, they made the room dark and heavy. We started by removing the treatments and adding low profile honeycomb blinds and a fresh coat of Sherwin Williams Modern Gray. The room immediately felt fresh and bigger.

When it came to updating the furniture we turned to our friends at Raymour & Flanigan. Jenni, Mike and the kids use their family room for hanging out with friends and watching TV. They needed comfortable and functional pieces that could take a beating.

We chose the versatile Lakeside collection. The Lakeside Chair and a Half and Ottoman has to be my all time favorite. It’s beyond comfortable and so easy to clean. If you love the relaxed look don’t think twice about slipcovers. To brighten the space we chose the natural oyster color and I added a variety of Spring textures, colors and patterns to help create this colorful family friendly space. One of my 2017 trends was textured fringe pom-poms and embroidery. I love them all and they are super soft to cozy up with. I have the best  Home Decor and Design Trends in another blog post.

We All Need a Bit of Turquoise

Jenni had this sweet ceramic bird with iron legs that just screamed Spring. Plan on seeing a lot of turquoise this year. Dark and light, from linens to velvets.  It’s such a happy and fresh color.  In color psychology, turquoise controls and heals the emotions creating emotional balance and stability. It represents serenity, creativity, good luck, spiritual grounding, friendship, joy, tranquility, patience, intuition, and loyalty. So it’s safe to say we all need some turquoise in our lives.

On the rustic pine wood end tables I added petite topiaries and fresh scented candles in terrariums. The black iron of the rustic table lamp arms tie in to the other metal accents throughout the family room keeping with it’s rustic farmhouse style.

Spring_livingroom_tour-Blogger-slipcovered_furniture_Lakeside_chair_ottoman_Raymour_flanigan_familyroom_interior_design_rustic_farmhouse_style_candleYou all know that my family loves games and my sister had this wooden tic tac toe game that she sold at our family’s shop Wisteria Flowers And Gifts. I added a moss covered rabbit and a fresh arrangement of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths planted in a tin and iron footed planter. The smell was incredible and made you forget that there was a snow storm happening right outside the family room window.

Stowing Away All the Stuff

On the other side of the family room there is a small indented area that needed to be filled. Jenni and Mike had a sofa table there but the space seemed too open and bare. The sofa table just wasn’t long enough. To create height and interest, I added a Wyatt computer credenza and bookcases to house all the movies, games and tv components. This collection is wonderful and the rustic gray washed wood and farmhouse style now blends perfectly with the rest of the home.  The three pieces fit to a “T” and any of them would look great on their own. So much versatility. To see the adjoining formal living room click here.

I found the perfect sign for over the TV. Happiness is an inside job! Right Stella?

HELLO Spring!

We’ve been waiting for you. We accessorized the Wyatt bookcases with a whimsical Spring arrangement (let’s call her Mother Nature), bright yellow and green accessories, faux and real greenery, books, baskets, and blankets.  Due to the storm the hardwoods under the wall to wall carpet didn’t get finished in time.  We purchased a wool sisal area rug bound with a gray cotton edging that will warm up the space further with the refinished floor.  We cannot wait!

Calling All Dog Lovers

My family loves animals especially dogs! I purchased a set of distressed painted dog sculptures. Their names are Hudson and Penny. The aged patina reminds me of the vintage iron collectible figurines from the 20’s. Does anyone remember them? I have a bulldog that we use as a door stop.

A few years back I stopped at a local architectural salvage yard and stumbled across this green painted corbel. I know I paid way too much but it was seriously calling my name. I tried to count the paint layers and imagine where this might have lived. I’ve been using it as a bookend and brought it over to use with the other green accessories. Jenni fell in love with it too and well it’s found a new home just under the silhouette portrait of their last dog Maggie.

My Barn Door Obsession

More details of the Wyatt credenza. I can’t get enough of barn doors lately. I’m using a barn door in a model home that’s close to completion and I can’t wait to share it with you in a few months.  Barn doors are space saving solutions and the hardware out there is affordable…and don’t think that it’s just for the farmhouse look. There are chrome sets that are sleek and modern. Try them on a pantry, laundry room, playroom, and office. To shop barn door hardware click here and follow along on my Instagram feed and story to see all the behind the scenes of my Greenpoint model homes.

The Easter Bunny Cometh

Durning our little stay at Hotel Catalana we had time to set up the kitchen for a trial Easter dinner run. I’m looking forward to sharing more of our family’s Easter tablescape next week but since I’m so terrible at keeping secrets I had to give you all a peek. It was just over a year ago that we embarked on this rooms renovation. If you’d like to see the before pictures prior to tearing down the wall click here. It was a great transformation!

Thanks so much for stopping by to see how I added Spring to my family’s home. They say that when life gives you lemons you make lemonade and we did during Blizzard Stella! The 5 days being snowed in and without power gave us a chance to spend quality time together creating memories.

Don’t forget to head on over to my good friend Amy at Crazy Chic Design and see what she has done. She has been so busy decorating a gorgeous penthouse apartment that you won’t want to miss either. The entire blogger group welcomes you so don’t miss a stop. There’s something for everyone. Have a wonderful day!

This is such a great tour! I felt like I was right in your sister’s home taking a lovely tour! You two did a fantastic job and I loved how you accomplished her spring decor despite the nasty storm. Although I say, I love your photo of the kids making mac and cheese, that is a classic!

Hi Tara! Lucky you to have one! I love it. I have washed at home the seat cushions but my washer isn’t large enough for the chair slipcover. You might want to take to the dry cleaners.
